Photo Craft Laboratories started back in 1974 in Boulder, Colorado as a neighborhood photo lab. Colorado has a long heritage of great photography and Boulder has its fair share of amateur photographers. Boulder also has an unusually high population of creative folks. There are many successful fine art photographers, as well as commercial shooters who work locally, nationally and globally. There is an unusually large collection of National Geographic photographers who live here, too. And we have a very high concentration of graphic designers, ad agencies and other professional imaging people as well. It is a small town with a rather large reputation.

The lab grew over the years, constantly adding “big city” services and top notch staff and equipment. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, we were a world renowned producer of 70mm duplication film for the stock photography industry. For a lab in Boulder, Colorado it was a lot of fun to be respected by photographic professionals from New York to Europe and Asia. Requests for our printing expanded as well. More and more clients were ordering larger and larger prints. These prints often required advance print finishing techniques. Again our capacities and staff expertise had to grow with the demand.

We began offering digital imaging services in the late 1980s. Our first large format digital prints were sold in 1993. The learning curve was tough, because so few people knew what was going on. We needed to come up with our own solutions, techniques and color management protocols. We adapted ICC profile standards very early on in this process and have been teaching clients these color management techniques for over 15 years. We love to share our expertise with clients, partly to make the process smoother for everyone, but mostly because it leads to successful outcomes. That is what we have always been about and that is our driving commitment today. 

We created the sub brand of GrafXGroup in 2007 to better reflect the nature of our business growth. While we are committed to producing the finest photographic prints available today, we are excited to also be producing larger and more sophisticated marketing and display graphics for today’s incredible demand for visual images. The GrafXGroup sales team is ready to meet every need that clients can dream up. And our engineering and production teams are ready to meet the production challenges. We thrive on the excitement of helping clients move from concept to conclusion.

Our passion for producing successful imaging projects has never wavered. We have been adding to our production facilities on a regular basis. In July of 2009 we moved into a new space that not only increases our floor space, but also gives us much more flexibility and efficiency. Much of our equipment and most of our work surfaces will be on wheels, so that the workplace can move and flow with the project at hand. This efficiency helps get the jobs done in a timely manner and the flexibility helps with the cost management.
